Cubebin reference substance (obtained by isolation from plant source or synthetic) has been identified as a mixture of two 8,8'-trans diastereomers at C-9 (Pascoli et al., Phytochemistry 2006, 67, 735-742). Cubebin reference standard consists (as confirmed by NMR) of an 1:1 mixture of the two diastereomers (8R,8'R,9R)-cubebin (alpha-cubebin; CAS # 112458-74-9), and (8R,8'R,9S)-cubebin (cubebin or beta-cubebin; CAS # 18423-69-3). The two diastereomers are not separated in regular HPLC.
